How To Make A Pin Go Viral
Key things to note when you are making a pin go viral.
Pin Creation
SIZE: A perfect pin is going to be 600×900 pixels. The size of your pin is important because it fits Pinterests “aesthetic”. If you pin is too small or too large, it likely won’t make the popular screen because Pinterest will push it to the bottom.
High Quality Image: Use a stock photo or your own image to get a message across. I also found that using bright loud colors generate a lot of impressions and clicks.
Large Readable Text: Use BRIGHT LOUD colors and BOLD fonts. Aim to use clear fonts and contrasting colors!
Catchy Headlines: When you are creating a Pin, use a title that is compelling. A PR trick I learned in college was aim to keep all headings under 8 words and don’t forget adjectives. Be very descriptive when you are writing a title! For example, instead of saying “16 Products on Amazon” Change the title to “16 Weirdly Satisfying Products On Amazon” — hard to believe but throwing in two extra catchy words like “Weirdly satisfying” make the post sound interesting to a potential customer, resulting in more clicks.
What I use to create my Pins: CANVA. I swear by canva! You can use Canva for literally everything and it is free! They have layouts already created with the proper dimensions for so many things (Pins, Facebook Ads, Blog covers, Instagram posts, Flyers, Business Cards… literally everything.) making it easy to get your right size 600×900 pixels!
My advice: Figure out your Pinterest and brand aesthetic early on and stick to that. It is best if you are consistent with the content you put out there, you will start to get recognized. How to do this: Use similar fonts, colors, styles. They don’t all have to be exactly the same, but aim for a similarity. For example, my “theme” is mostly pinks and black.
You can see a few pins here that displays my Pinterest aesthetic.
You will see in the examples above, I keep my colors relatively consistent – black, white, blush pink, hot pink. I play around with different fonts and style sometimes adding pictures.
One thing you should ALWAYS do when creating pins, is add your blog URL to it. See at the bottom of all my pins it says “www.livinglikelola.com”
Pin Description
Keyworded Description: This step is SUPER important in making a pin go viral. If you want your pin to go viral, you have to tell the search engine what it is about. A general rule is including 5 keywords and 3 hashtags.
Natural Description: While it is important to pack up your description with 5 relevant keywords, you want to make the caption look good too. I recommend you write 2-3 natural sentences describing what your pin is about. Incorporate the keywords within the sentences!
Include Your Logo: Don’t forget to include your logo or website name at the bottom of every pin. Not only does this give you credit, it helps you get recognized. Gets your name out there and helps potential followers learn your name.
Image Description Name: One of the most skipped steps in creating a viral pin is saving your image file name with a relevant word. This goes for blog posts and pin covers – you want to save your images with a descriptive keyword instead of the generic “IMAGE1”. This another step that helps google learn what your post/page/pin is about so it can get your content in front of the right audience even faster.
My Advice: Remember, there is such a thing as too many keywords. Sometimes if you go over the top with your keywords it will work against you! So my advice is to stick with the rule of thumb: 5 keywords, 3 hash tags, 2 sentences.
This post showed how to make your pins go viral on Pinterest. The key takeaway, is regardless of if you have a lot of followers or not on Pinterest, you can go viral. It all falls into the look of the pin, the keywords, and who you are getting it in front of.
